Oral Health During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, there are some changes that you may observe in your mouth. Many women notice an increase in bleeding or puffiness of the gums due to the hormonal changes. It is important to thoroughly remove plaque with brushing and flossing to minimize the effects of this “pregnancy gingivitis” that may occur. Continue to see your dentist for your regular cleanings. Your hygienist and dentist can discuss if there are any concerns about your gums.

Mothers who suffer from morning sickness and frequent vomiting may be at higher risk of acid erosion of the teeth. It is recommended to rinse with water after vomiting and then brush later after the water and saliva have neutralized the acids in the mouth. If your dentist does find any cavities or recommend any treatment, it will typically be performed in the second trimester. If any urgent needs arise, such a painful toothache or an infection, you may need to have it addressed no matter what stage of your pregnancy you are in. The dentist may want to consult with your obstetrician if medications or extensive treatment is needed.

Practicing good oral hygiene and continuing to see your dentist will keep you and your child on the right track.
